About Capt. William Bassett

There is a lot of range in the sources of William Bassett's birth, anywhere from 1604 to 1650. I am choosing to go with the 1630 date. The most credible source is the Stella Picket Hardy book, and she credits him with service in the Civil War, which lasted 1642 - 1649. He could have served in the Civil War in his late teens. The 1604 date would have his only marriage at the age of 66, possible, but not probable. Some of the sources are as follows:

William Bassett II Birth 1630 England, Hampshire, Isle of Wight http://www.gurganus.org/ourfamily/browse.cfm/Bridget-Cary/p166538

Captain William Bassett, the progenitor of the family in Virginia, was an officer in the Royal Army during the Civil War, and was later in Col. Rutherford's Regiment in Dunkirk in 1661. He came to the colony prior to 1665, for in that year he was appointed by the Assembly of Virginia €œsurveyor of the whole work, and to have command of the workmen therein employed in building a fort for the better defense of the country at Jamestown He was paid 10,000 pounds of tobacco for his service. He acquired large estates in Virginia; d. in 1671, Colonial Families of the Southern States of America, Stella Pickett Hardy, published by Tobias A. Wright, New York, 1911
