About Capt. William Dutcher

In 1775 organized the Upper Philipsburgh Associated Company of Militia, which he equipped at his own expense and commanded from 13 September 1776 until 16 June 1778 when he was succeeded by Lieutenant Daniel Martling.

In 1785 he purchased from the Commissioners of Forfeitures the 215 acre farm on which he was living (includes most of central Irvington) and was probably the leasehold of his grandfather Pieter BUYS.

Notes

  • MacKenzie manuscript lists date of birth as 1 January 1744, but this is undoubtedly incorrect. According to Griffin, citing Tarrytown Dutch Church Record 1024, he was baptized 6 June 1741.18 And calculating birth date back from death as listed on his tombstone, birth should be 14 March 1741.17
