William was a Captain in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. He commanded the forces at Hackensack, served under Gen. Washington, crossed the Delaware, wintered at Valley Forge and engaged in the Battle of Trenton. William founded the town of Millerstown, PA, and served in the PA State Legislature and Senate for 25 years. The town of Millerstown is now known as Fairfield, Adams, Pennsylvania.

His grandfather Hugh was a Presbyterian Ulster-Scot. A family story is that Hugh first emigrated from Scotland to Ulster, Ireland, and then to the US. Queen Anne's Law passed in 1709 made it almost impossible to be a Presbyterian and to hold a job. Hugh came to the "colonies" with his son John (Capt. Wm. Miller's father) and his brother William.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Feb 29 2020, 6:08:32 UTC
