Capt William Saunders was born on April 20, 1759 in Albemarle County, Virginia, United States. His parents were Col. John Sanders and Anne Sanders.

William married wife 1) Elizabeth Saunders (Mitchell) in 1782 in Casewell, NC. Together they had the following children:

William married wife 2) Nancy Cuningham on January 13, 1795 in Caswell, North Carolina. Together they had the following children: Ethelbert Watkins Saunders; Lafayette Saunders Judge.
