About Capt. William Clarence Tooze

Calif. Capt. U.S.N.R. WWI & WWII

Capt. William C. Tooze, age 64, died at the naval hospital, Camp White, Medford, Oregon, on Oct. 20, 1945. He had been on active duty at the 12th naval district headquarters in San Francisco and was hospitalized for about two weeks before his death. Born in Newberg, Ore., and reared in San Jose, Capt. Tooze moved to Santa Cruz in 1900 as a naval reserve officer. He was also an agent for the Sperry Flour Company. Once a deck officer on the battleship Oregon, he was assigned to San Francisco during World War II and promoted to captain in 1943. During World War I, he was on convoy duty in the Atlantic aboard the cruiser Pueblo. He was active in the Presbyterian Church in Santa Cruz and president of the county Christian Endeavor Society. He was survived by his brother Charles Tooze of Santa Cruz, two sisters, Mrs. Frank Butler of Los Gatos and Mrs. William E. Shipman of Lodi, and a daughter, Mrs. Nancy Hansen of San Francisco, who recently married Sgt. Richard Hansen of the marine corps. (Santa Cruz Sentinel, Oct. 21, 1945.)
