About Captain George Robert Stoney
Birthplace based on Alumni Dublinenses: "Stoney, George, S.C. (Mr. Darby), June 12, 1790, aged 16; s. of George, Gai?, defunctus; b. Co. Tipperary."
"Geo. R. Stoney, of Grayfort, Co. Tipp. Capt 22nd Reg. to only d. of Major Gen. Ellis, of Kempsey. 1801" - Thomas U. Sadleir, Irish genealogical notes (National Library of Ireland GO 557): source "Hib."
Died without issue. Left Greyfort to his brother Bigoe.
Memorial in Borrisokane church: "Sacred to the memory of George Robert Stoney, Esquire, of Greyfort, in this Parish. He died the 8th day of October, 1808, and in the 34th year of his age. He was an affectionate husband, a sincere friend, an honest man.To perpetuate, while these frail materials shall endure, the virtues which distinguished his character, his afflicted widow, Joanna, daughter of the late General Ellis, erects this marble."
Burke's Irish Family Records puts his birth in 1775, but 'Some older annals of the Stoney family' puts it in 1774, which is more in accordance with the memorial.
