He used up all of his available means, was in the Army two years, and returned to Harwinton CT in the fall of 1879 in broken health. He remarried in CT and in 1788 moved to New Haven VT where he died. Lee Ashmore sent the following information; He kept journals (1773-1780) of his voyages by sea from the Connecticut River (Saybrook) to the Mississippi (New Orleans). They were compiled into a book in 1802 and titled "Memoirs and Adventures of Captain Matthew Phelps".
