Second Lieutenant S. C. Stetson, USMCR, was designated Naval Aviator #4811 in 1933. Captain Stetson, following refresher aviation training was given a second designation, #8039, on 07 July 1941.

Capt. Stetson, assigned as an instructor, was killed on the runway at NAS Corpus Christi, Texas in the collision of two planes.

Captain Stetson, already a licensed pilot, enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve in 1929, and prior to receiving his commission in 1933, had been designated as a Naval Aviation Pilot (NAP). He was a grandson of John Batterson Stetson, the individual who designed a certain style hat which is still known today as "the stetson".

Captain Stetson left a widow, the former Miss Anne Denny, and two children, a son and daughter.
