  • Educated at Clifton College and went to the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich.
  • October 1902 he joined the Royal Engineers and after serving in Gibraltar and Cairo he was made Lieutenant in June 1905.

He was serving in the 56th Field Company of the Royal Engineers at the start of the First World War and was sent to France with the British Expeditionary Force, arriving at Mons on 22nd August, 1914. on the 23rd he was detailed to supervise the destruction of eight of the bridges over the canal. Although wounded by shrapnel early in the operation, Wright continued to set charges under the bridges. Working with Lance-Corporal Charles Jarvis, Wright managed to destroy Jemappes Bridge.

He recovered from his wounds but was killed on 14th September while helping an injured man across a pontoon bridge at Vailly. The Victoria Cross was awarded posthumously on 16th November 1914.

CITATION

An extract from "The London Gazette," dated 16th Nov., 1914, records the following

"Action for which commended :- Gallantry at Mons on 23rd August in attempting to connect up the lead to demolish a bridge under heavy fire; although wounded in the head he made a second attempt. At Vailly, on 14th September he assisted the passage of the 5th Cavalry Brigade over the pontoon bridge and was mortally wounded whilst assisting wounded men into shelter."
