STIRLING -- Capt. Yates Stirling III, U.S.N. (Ret.) of Franklin, VA, died September 14, 1997 in East Pavilin. Born in Manila, The Philippines, he was the son of the late Rear Admiral Yates Stirling, Jr. and Adelaide Egbert Stirling. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1926 and began his career as a naval aviator. During World War II, he served in the Pacific Theater as an officer in the Supply Corps. Following retirement from the Navy, he worked for the Equitable Life Assurance Company, taught math at Norfolk Academy in Norfolk, Va, did graduate work at VPI and was an Associate Professor of Engineering at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA. He was an active member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Norfolk, serving on the vestry as Junior Warden.

Mr. Sterling is survived by his wife of 62 years, Catherine Armstrong Stirling; son, Yates Stirling IV and his wife, Linda of San Diego, CA; a daughter, Suzanne Stirling Duffey and her husband, Ben of Franklin; three sisters, Ellen S. Sullivan of Lutherville, MD, Katherine Gordon Ilk of Baltimore MD and Adelaide S. Boyd of Portland, OR; one brother, Harry E. Stirling and his wife, Lee of McLean, VA; four grandchildren, Frederick M. Quayle, Jr., Catherine S. Quayle both of New York City, Heather A. Sterling and Scott C. Stirling, both of San Diego, CA. A Memorial Service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Emmanual Episcopal Church by the Rev. Ben Duffey and the Rev. Edmund Pickup. Wright Funeral Home is in charge.
