About Cardinal Francois Desiré Mathieu

Roman Catholic Cardinal. Born to a family of farmers, François Désiré Mathieu rose to become one of the most distinguished French prelates of his era. Receiving his education in Nancy, he obtained a bachelorship in letters from the Académie de Strasbourg in 1859 and was ordained priest in May 1863 for the diocese of Nancy. Lecturing history and literature at the minor seminary of Pont-à-Mousson, Mathieu served as chaplain to the Dominican nuns from 1879 up to 1890 and parish priest of Saint-Martin in the same town between 1890 and 1893, when he was appointed bishop of Angers. Promoted to the archdiocese of Toulouse three years later, Pope Leo XIII created him cardinal with the title of Santa Sabina in 1899. A devoted scholar, his writings soon attracted wide attention, including that of the named Pope who soon had him move to Rome to serve in the Curia. Resigning the archbishopric of Toulouse in December 1899, in 1907 he was appointed member of the Académie Française following the death of Cardinal Perraud the previous year. Mathieu passed unexpectedly away while attending the International Eucharistic Congress in London, following an operation required to diminish a liver and kidney disorder. Transferred back to his native France, his body was interred in Nancy following a pompous funeral which saw the participation of hundreds.
