About Carlos José Arenas

Carlos was born on October 18, 1922 in Puerto Rico to Carlos Arenas Dávila and Rosario Arenas (Chiqués Berlingeri). He was the youngest of 5 children, the only son. He had one half sister (Alicia Ramírez Arenas), daughter of his widowed father. His three other sisters were Carlitas Vivaldi (Arenas), Rosa Vicenta Russillo (Arenas) and Rosario Fernández (Arenas), all born in Puerto Rico.

In 1929 or 1930 the family emigrated from Puerto Rico to the Bronx, New York. Carlos attended St. Athanasius Elementary School and James Monroe High School. After High School, he got a job in the offices of the Grace Line, where he was in charge of the Freight Manifest Department. He worked in New York, New Orleans, and California, and there he met his beloved wife to be, Bertha, at the Hollywood Palladium. Carlos was transferred to New York and Bertha followed. Carlos and Bertha married on December 10, 1943. Carlos had joined the Merchant Marine, where he served as ship purser and pharmacist mate. He transferred to the Navy, and spent time in Nova Scotia, England, France, India and Africa. When World War II ended, Carlos and Bertha moved to California. Their beautiful daughter, Christina, was born in July, 1950. Throughout the ’50’s, Carlos was in the automobile business. Carlos owned C-A Auto Sales in El Monte, California. His agency specialized in the sale of Triumph and DKW automobiles, along with the sale of foreign and domestic used cars. With modern equipment and a staff of six, they handled service problems for all foreign and domestic cars. In 1959, Carlos went into the pool business. He owned and operated Pools by Mr. Carlos, until he retired in 2009. The company was a family owned business, which gave a personal approach to each and every customer. The goal was to build the best swimming pool possible, at the same time keeping it affordable. He died on May 27, 2011 from a heart attack in Covina, California. He leaves a grandson, Sean Chris Arenas (neé Smith)
