About Caroline Buck
Caroline was the oldest child of parents Stephen Nutting and Polly Kemp. She married Leroy Vorce on November 26, 1849 in Henderson, New York. They had two sons, John Baker and Stephen Harrison. Leroy was working as a tailor at the time.
In 1854 the family moved from Henderson, New York to Concord, Wisconsin and Leroy began farming. Caroline was very unhappy living in Wisconsin. She missed her friends and family in New York and she fell out of love with her husband. There was a man in New York that she had fallen in love with. In August 1855 she took her sons and moved back to Henderson. Leroy sent an emissary to her to beg her to come home, but she refused. In September 1858 Leroy Vorce filed for divorce. He was granted custody of their sons, but he never did take them from Caroline. The following year he was remarried and had begun a new family.
Caroline married Albert Buck sometime between 1860-1870. It is assumed he is the man she had fallen in love with while still married to Leroy Vorce. The 1870 census shows them married and living in Henderson. Albert is employed as a farm laborer and Caroline is working in a cheese factory. By 1880 they have moved to Bangor, Michigan and Albert is farming. Caroline's sons are living in Bangor so it can be assumed Caroline wanted to live closer to them. Son Stephen Harrison died in 1882 and Albert died in 1885. In 1900 Caroline is living next door to son John in Covert, Michigan. She is the owner and operator of a boarding house with nine male boarders. In 1910 she is living alone in Covert. Son John and his family are also living in Covert.
