About Caroline Johnson

Mrs. Caroline B. JOHNSON, One of Best Known Women of Bloomfield, Dies. HAD BEEN IN GOOD HEALTH-Funeral Services Held Tuesday Afternoon, From the Residence.” [Transcribed on July 13, 2005 by RLJ from microfilm of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library.]Mrs. Caroline (BLACKMORE) JOHNSON, one of the best known women of Bloomfield and a lifelong resident of Greene County, sustained a stroke of apoplexy Sunday morning at 8:30 and expired almost instantly. Her health had declined in the last few years, but she was still active , and no recent change in her condition had been noticed, except that Saturday she had not felt as well as usual and went to bed that night earlier than usual. She was the first one of the household to get up Sunday morning. She dressed and went about the house as usual and said she had a very good night’s rest. A little while later she went to the bathroom where she fell. Her daughters hurried to her assistance but the fatal summons had come and she had expired before the physician arrived. A daughter of Samuel and Matilda (MACKALL) BLACKMORE she was born near Scotland, this county, March 10, 1857; died April 28, 1935, aged Seventy-eight years, one month, eighteen days. Her entire life was spent in this county. She was married to John W. JOHNSON December 6, 1890, and for many years following their marriage their home was on a fine farm near Newberry. In 1910, almost twenty-five years ago, the family removed to Bloomfield. Mr. JOHNSON was elected treasurer of Greene County in 1912 and in proof of his popularity as an official he was re-elected in 1914. He died November 1, 1932. Four children were born into this family. Cora, a daughter, died July 31, 1918, in the beauty of her young womanhood. Surviving their mother are two daughters, Mrs. Emory H. WIRES, of Vincennes, and Lola JOHNSON, at home, and one son Hershel V. JOHNSON, of Bloomfield. There are also surviving three brothers and a sister. There are: Charles S. BLACKMORE, Samuel T. BLACKMORE, N. B. BLACKMORE, all of Scotland, and Mrs. Joseph KERN, of Linton. For many years she had been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and took an active part in the work of the church. Even in these later years she attended the services as much as her strength would permit. She was a woman of fine conscience which had never been abused. She had fir convictions, was devoted to her family and friends, and was kind and charitable. Quiet in her nature she was plain and unassuming, but she was fondly attached to her home, and her heart and mind were fixed upon the higher and deeper things of life. The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock from the residence, and were marked by simplicity, with Dr. M. A. FARR, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church in charge. Burial was in the family plot in Grandview Cemetery.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Jan 14 2022, 4:34:46 UTC
