About Caroline Anna Maas

Caroline Anna Wileheminia Ewoldt was born May 17, 1919, the daughter of Johann Friedrich and Helena Dorothea Wohlert Schwartz Jr. She died at the Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa on Wednesday, February 15, 2006 at the age of eighty-six years, eight months and twenty-nine days.

Caroline was born near Schleswig, Crawford County, Iowa and was baptized, August 17, 1919 at the Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church in Schleswig and later confirmed there on Palm Sunday, April 9, 1933. She received her education in rural schools between Schleswig and Ricketts, Iowa.

She was united in marriage to Leroy Maas and to this union one daughter, Adella was born. Leroy died in 1944 during WWII.

On March 5, 1948, Caroline was united in marriage to Erlin Julius Ewoldt. The couple settled on a farm near Schleswig for seven years and were blessed with the birth of six boys and one daughter. They also farmed various places in southwest Iowa Communities. After her children were in school, Caroline was self-employed as a house cleaner. In 1974, she joined her husband in a business of custom fencing and snow removal until the death of Erlin in 1996 and then worked together with her son, Howard in the fencing and snow removal business for one year.

In her leisure time, Caroline enjoyed polka dancing, listening to Polka Music and the Polka Party. She also enjoyed gardening, crocheting, needle work for herself and her family.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, Leroy and her husband, Erlin; three sons, Howard and two in infancy; two granddaughters; one brother, Fritz Schwartz; three sisters-in-law and three brothers-in-law.

Survivors include two daughters, Adella Farley and her husband, Larry; Irene Ewoldt, all of Manilla; three sons, Delbert Ewoldt of Council Bluffs; Joe Ewoldt and his wife, Penny of Vail; Earl Ewoldt and his wife, Micheles of Breda; seven grandchildren, Jeremy and his friend, Amy Wimpe of Breda; Dustin and his wife, Kalina of Fort Myers, Florida; Emmalee and her friend, Chris Julin of Vail; Crystal and her husband, Jerome Creasy Jr. of Omaha, Nebraska; Elizabeth of Huxley; Beau J. and Jared of Breda; Janae and her husband, Robert Mallory of Council Bluffs; four great-grandchildren, Selena and Robert Mallory Jr., Rylee and Sean Ewoldt; one sister-in-law, Mary E. Ewoldt of Rapid City, South Dakota; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p m Monday, February 20, 2006 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Chris Burtnett officiated the service and grave side services held at the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig, Iowa. David Ewold provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Penny Ewoldt singing, "In the Garden" and for Congregational Hymn, "How Great Thou Art". Other service music included a CD of "Footsteps" by David O'Donnell. Honorary Pallbearers were: Beau Jay Ewoldt, John Ehrichs jr., Dustin Ewoldt, Jeremy Ewoldt and Stanley Ewoldt. Pallbearers were: Wayne Behrend, Delbert Gierstorf, Arlen Gierstorf, Arlo Schwanz, Donald Ewoldt and Lloyd Carlson. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the Denison Community Room, catered by Staley's Food Service. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.
