Carter passed away on a stormy afternoon in a state hosptial in St. Louis, Il. Is buried in Batavia, IL
Carter was placed in the Anna State hospital in 1947. He suffered from Malaria, and syphilis, etc. He did not correspond with the family until the mid 60's. He responded to a letter Lorrie had written. Mary, his sister had told me he had syphillis and also suffered from Malaria. His brain was quite a mess. He wrote crazy things. And smoked cigarrettes. He was moved to Pine Hurst in Danville, IL in the late 60's.
Vina and Mary fought for him to get the head stone from the military service. He never married.
He was in world war 1. Helped to build the Panama Canal. He also worked on the Hoover Dam. He lied about his age to get away from his father.
Was given to the custody of his Aunt Hazell Belle Terwilliger Nordwall when his mother passed away. They did not get along at all. Hazel moved to New York and May Rickard, watched over both Carter and Burdette.
Thurman, his father is said to have chased the boys around the house in and out with a knife trying to take the paper money or whatever for drinking money.
Carter's Social Security Number was 718 09 0984
In pulling up the 1940 census Carter was in San Francisco CA. I found he was residing in Fort Windield Scott. An artilery base which was closed in 1950
