Catharine Rice

Catharine Smith was born August 12, 1796 in Jessamine County Kentucky and died November 11, 1872 in Floyd County Indiana. We know the birth and death dates from a 1968 reading of the Cook Kepley Cemetery located just north of Edwardsville in Georgetown Township, Floyd County, Indiana. In July 2004, I was unable to locate this cemetery. Recently, another descendant has located the cemetery and provided a photo of Catharine Smith's tombstone. The marriage records at the Jessamine County Historical Society show that on November 8,1821 Catharine Smith married John Rice. The bond was signed by William Young and John Rice. John Rice was born about 1800 and he died on September 26, 1877 in Floyd County, Indiana. John Rice was the son of Andrew Rice and Mary Neat. A deed recorded on February 20, 1827 in Jessamine County shows that "John Rice and Catharine his wife who was formerly Catharine Smith the daughter of Isaac Smith" sold Catharine's one-sixth share of the Isaac Smith property to Robert Smith for $200. In another deed dated 1859, " John Rice and Catharine his wife" sold the one-fifth share of the one-sixth share received from Mary Smith Young. Land records at the Bureau of Land Management website show that on November 24, 1830, John Rice purchased 80 acres in Floyd County. The legal description of the property was the West Half of the Southwest Quarter of Section 25, Township 2 South, Range 5 East. John Rice and Catharine Smith had the following children: William Rice born about 1822 Jacob Rice born about 1824 Joseph Rice born about 1828 Isaac Rice born about 1832 John Lawrence Rice born June 15, 1838 and died July 7, 1850. Andrew Rice born 1835 and died 1906. There may be other children, this is the only information that I have found to date and I have not independently verified its accuracy. John and Catharine Rice and their children John, Andrew and Joseph are buried in the Cook- Kepley Cemetery in Floyd County, Indiana. Credit to David L.
