Catherine "Penny" Bates, 81, of El Cajon, a retired junior high school teacher, passed away at her home on June 8, 2007. https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/sandiegouniontribune/obituary.asp...

Penny was born in Somerville, Massachusetts to Alfred Gardner Hobson and Catherine Garvie Hobson, Scottish immigrants who arrived in the US in the early 1920s. Penny was raised in Somerville and Quincy, Massachusetts until age 14 when her family moved to Staten Island, New York. In Staten Island, Penny graduated with Honors from Tottenville High School in June 1943.

After high school, Penny received a scholarship to attend Averett Women's College in Danville, Virginia where she was President of Alpha Sigma Sorority and the Baptist Student Union Council, and a member of Phi Theta Kappa.

Penny graduated from Averett with a 2-year degree in Home Economics in June of 1945. Although she was offered an academic scholarship to continue her studies at the University of Virginia, she decided to return to Staten Island to become a dietitian at Richmond Hospital.

In August 1945, Penny married Lt. Lee Clyburn Bates, USMS, at St. Andrew's Church in Staten Island. In 1958, they settled in San Diego and raised three children, Linda, Patricia, and Lee, Jr. They divorced in 1969.

In 1963, Penny returned to college at San Diego State where she received a Bachelor's Degree, with High Honors, in Home Economics, a Secondary Teaching Credential, and Master's Degree in Education. She taught junior high Home Economics and English at Prospect Avenue School in Santee until 1973. She had fond memories of her students.

During her retirement years Penny enjoyed the company of her children and grandchildren. "Grandma Penny" lovingly provided childcare for her grandchildren, and with her caring nature she became the adopted grandmother to other children in need of a loving soul. She also made a point to keep in touch with her beloved Hobson family in New York and Massachusetts.

Penny is survived by her children, Linda Ahrens of Tucson, Patricia Jensen of El Cajon, and Lee Bates Jr. "Skip" of Poway, her sister Priscilla Brenner of El Dorado Hills; grandchildren Brian Kete, Douglas Northrup, Mary Jensen, Jamie Jensen, Andrew Bates and Natalie Bates. She is also survived by her Hobson family nephews and nieces, Robert, William, and Christopher Hobson, Sheila Stubbs, Joann Gutkes, Cathi Gover, David Hillis, John and Mark Brenner, Michelle Tower, Christine Corcoran.

A private memorial service was held on June 18, 2007 at El Camino Memorial Park. Published in U-T San Diego on June 20, 2007 https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/142766242
