CATHERINE THOMAS (Mrs. JAMES HAW) was the daughter of OWEN THOMAS and MARY (POLLY) HARDIN THOMAS. Among researchers and descendants there seem to be no complete agreement as to the number and the names of CATHERINE's brothers and sisters. Because of his prominence, my family has always known she was a sister of Major General JOHN THOMAS which fact is stated in several local, state and Methodist histories. It seems agreed that others of the family were ENOS, HENRY, HARDIN, MARY and LEWIS. I have seen HEZEKIAH listed as a son of OWEN, but have not been able to find any evidence of his existence, but General JOHN THOMAS had a son with that name. The General also had a son, ISAAC, and an earlier ISAAC seems to have been associated with the family; he was married to SARAH CUMMINS November 7, 1792; possibly a nephew of OWEN's, for Reverend JACOB YOUNG mentioned the presence of OWEN's brother at a meeting in OWEN's home.

"CATHERINE THOMAS, at the time of her marriage, lived in Nelson County, Kentucky in an area which is now a part of Washington County. In the will of her grandfather, Major JOHN HARDIN, CATHERINE was left 200 acres of land near the Hardin Settlement on a run called the Last Run of Bluff Creek. In spite of thorough search, I have been unable to learn what disposition CATHERINE made of that land. The marriage bond of CATHERINE and JAMES HAW, with JAMES HAW and MARK HARDIN as sureties, is on file in the Bardstown Courthouse, together with the written consent of CATHERINE's father, OWEN THOMAS. This would seem to indicate that she was under 21 at the time, but I have seen records of such paternal consent when the bride was several years past that age. The couple went to Sumner County, Tennessee to live where she bore him five children: MARY, NANCY, SAMUEL, URIEL and JAMES O'KELLY HAW. JAMES died in 1807, or early 1808, when his son, URIEL, was eight years old. As executrix, CATHERINE did not make final settlement of his estate until 1811, at which time she signed herself 'CATY GARRISON.' On January 14, 1809, CATHERINE was married to EPHRAIM GARRISON in Sumner County. She bore him two sons: JOHN WESLEY and HARDIN THOMAS GARRISON." --courtesy Joseph L. Haw, Caledonia, MO, ca. 1976-77.
