About Catherine Philippina Loos
She was born Katherine Philippina Kull in Pirmasens, but later Americanized the spelling of her name to Catherine. She was born on December 10, 1795, and baptised in the Lutheran Church the following day. In 1821 she married Jacques George Loos from nearby Alsace. Although she moved to another country, the actual distance was only about 35 miles. She and Jacques had four daughters and two sons. One daughter died in infancy.
In early 1833, Jacques came to America where he set up a tailor shop in New Franklin, Stark County, Ohio. Katherine and the five children joined him near the end of the year. Sadly Jacques died a few weeks after their reunion. Katherine was left with the task of raising the children in a new country. Her eldest son Charles was attracted to the preaching of the Restoration Movement and left the Lutheran Church for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Eventually most of the family followed him into the new church. Charles attended Bethany College and followed an academic career eventually becoming president of Kentucky University (Transylvania University). Emily married George Parker; they lived in Ohio, moved to Minnesota, and later moved to Arizona Territory where they are counted among the early pioneers of Prescott. Louise and Philip both married and lived in nearby Steubenville. Philip and his wife Julia Martin had no children, but Louise and her husband William Urquhart have descendants still living in the area. It is believed that the youngest daughter Wilhelmina married someone at Bethany in the 1850s and moved, possibly to the Pittsburgh area. Inscription: Our Dear Mother Catherine S. Loos Born at Pirmasens, Rhenish Bavaria, 1800 Died June 25, 1868 [date of birth and middle initial are at variance with known records]
