About Catherine McKenna

Notes written by an unknown person "after a talk with Kathleen and Eileen McKenna", August 1981

In the graveyard beside the Old Priory in Dungiven, which is now a preserved monument, is a gravestone clearly marked:

Patrick McKenna, formerly of Terkane, Maghera who died at Dungiven, January 27 1852 aged 41 years. Also his wife Catherine who died 27 May 1880 aged 76 years.

When the original Patrick McKenna died his son Bernard was two years of age or thereabouts. It appears that this Bernard and other members of his family went to live with his mother Catherine's people - the McCloskey's of Ovile (a townland near Dungiven). The McCloskey's of the paper shop up the town in Dungiven are of this family.

Incidentally, it is through this Catherine McKenna (neé McCloskey) that there is a family connection with the McCloskey's of New Orleans. There is an article in the summer 1981 edition of Benbradagh about a visit of some of these McCloskey's to Dungiven. Bernard is buried in the McCloskey family grave in Dungiven churchyard.
