About Catherine Ridley

There is very little information on Catherine Ridley and I could find no images of her. Most of what I relate was found during research about her father, sister and daughter who were both more well known than Catherine was. -Elizabeth R. Laumas

Catherine Livingston Ridley (1751-1813) was the daughter of Susannah and William Livingston who was the Governor of New Jersey and a signer of the Constitution.

Catherine married widower John Livingston. John had been previously married and had ten children before he married his first cousin Catherine.

Catherine’s sister, Sarah, married John Jay. John Jay was the first secretary of state for the new United States of America.

Eventually, she married again to Matthew Ridley and one of their daughters, Susan Anne Livingston Ridley Sedgwick became famous for writing children’s books.

It is quite apparent that Catherine spent her entire life in the presence of important figures in the early development of our country. She was the daughter of a governor and the sister-in-law of the first secretary of state.
