Catherine Rivault was a French Huguenot. She lived in Saint-Sauvant, France in the 1600's. She was sentenced to death in 1681, along with husband Gabriel Baubeau and three sons Gabriel, Laurence and Jean. Her name appears on a second list also dated 1681, stating she recanted at Saint-Sauvant, and her life was spared.
There is a birth recorded for a Catherine Rivault for 1630 in the Naissances et baptêmes de Haute-Bretagne, France, 1501-1907. If this is our Catherine, she was born in Saint-Aubin du Pavail, Haute-Bretagne.
Some believe that the family escaped to England, and from there, went to Virginia. Son Gabriel does appear on a transport list dated 1700. No proof has surfaced to show that his parents also came to Virginia. In fact, many web trees confused the facts about the two Gabriels, having the son married to his own mother.
