Be advised! Although there are various indications that Catharine, wife of Philip Schmidt, was Catharine Ruch/Rugh, a daughter of Michael Ruch/Rugh Sr., I have yet to see conclusive evidence. "

I have traced my ancestory to Catherine Rugh and Philip Schmidt. I, likewise, have not been able to find conclusive evidence to date that Catherine was the daughter of Michael, Sr. and Anna Franczina Merckling.

Any speculations are your part? Although I personally do not have all the dates and locations of Michael, Sr and Anna's children's baptisms, perhaps Catherine's birth was between Eastern and Western, PA ("on the trail")?

Thank you for any help or direction you may be able to supply.

Regards;

Mark Tarby

Hi Mark..

I think I failed to word my comment clearly. What I also meant to portray was that, although I have seen others say so, I have yet to see anything concrete showing that Catharine Ruch/Rugh actually married Philip Schmidt. Have you seen any evidence?

I can't help but wonder whether confusion has also been caused by the fact that the 2nd wife of Michael Rugh Jr. had the maiden name "Catherine Schmidt". This Catherine was referred to in court & land records following the death of her husband as "Catharina Ruch". (???)

What do you show in regards to identifying the wife of Peter Schmidt? Anything relatively concrete?

All I have as real evidence of her existance is that there was a Catharina Ruch in Westmoreland County (She was a sponsor in single state at the January 24, 1773 baptism by Schoolmaster Batthasor Meyer of Johannes Truby, son of Christopher Truby and Sibilla). It has been suggested that she was a daughter of Michael Ruch/Rugh the Sr. & wife Franzina. I think this is probably correct because Michael & Franzina appear to be the only adult married Ruch/Rugh couple living there at the time who would have such a daughter. But I haven't seen anything approaching proof.

Phil
