About Catherine Sophia Bertie, Baroness Rockingham
The tomb of Katherine Lady Watson is a powerful and moving piece. She reclines on a cushion, wearing long robes, elaborate headdress and a ruff. One hand appears to gesture at the onlooker, which would have once held a prayer book, this long since having been lost. By her side is a stone cradle, which contains an effigy of her infant son, who died shortly after birth on February 9th 1610. His mother died six days later, deaths during childbirth being a common occurrence in those days. She is buried at the Willoughby Tombs, St. James Church, Spilsby. Her son Edward is buried at Rockingham, and a memorial to him is buried with her at Spilsby. Edward died a few days after his mother.
