About Asenath Cecelia Dustin Matthews

Aseneath Cecelia Dustin was born February 25, 1850, in either Pottawattamie County, Iowa, or somewhere in the state of Missouri. She was the daughter of Joseph Dustin and his wife Sarah Jane Littlefield Dustin who were married September 4, 1845, in Hancock County, Illinois. In the 1850 U.S. Federal Census for Potttawattamie County, Iowa, dated November 18th, they were listed as follows: Joseph, 29, Sarah, 20, Hyrum, 3, Lovina, 2 and Cenith, 1 year old, a mis-spelling for Aseneath. Joseph was listed as being born in New York, Sarah in Ohio, Hyrum and Lovina in Illinois, and Aseneath in Iowa.

Living next door was Waldo Littlefield, 53, and his wife, Mary, 35, and their children, Joseph, 12, Sydney, 10, and David, 5. Waldo was Sarah's father. The families probably left for Utah sometime about 1852, and may have been sent to San Bernardino, California, to settle that area along with other LDS members who were sent by the church in about 1850.

In the 1860 U.S. Federal Census for San Bernardino, California, their family was listed as follows: Joseph, 30, Sarah, 28, Hiram, 13, Lovina J., 11, Cecilia, 10, and Ivona Eliza, 9 months old. Joseph was working as a farmer. In this census it stated that he and Sarah were both born in Ohio, Hiram in Illinois, Lovina in Iowa, Cecelia in Missouri, and Ivona in California.

They were still living in San Bernardino in the 1870 census and were listed as: Joseph, 40, Sarah, 38, Lavina, 21, Celia, 20, and Eliza, 10. Their son, Hyrum was also listed as Joseph, since that was his middle name, and he was 23 years old, working as a teamster, and born in Illinois. His father, Joseph, was working as a farmer. In this census, both Joseph and Sarah were listed as having been born in New York, Lavina, in Ohio, Celia, in Missouri, and Eliza in California. Both Joseph and his son Hyrum Joseph declared their real estate was valued at $300 and their personal estate at $150.

According to Find A, Joseph and Sarah Jane Littlefield divorced in 1868 and then he married Mary C. Bickmore in 1878 and they had 12 children. This record shows that Joseph was born December 5, 1827, in Genesee County, New York, and that he passed away December 10, 1914, in San Bernardino, California, in the Pioneer Memorial Cemetery. Sarah Jane Littlefield Dustin passed away three years later on September 21, 1917, and was buried in the same cemetery as Joseph.

Two years later, Aseneath married Thomas Jeptha Matthews on December 22, 1872, in San Bernardino, California. They had six children but were then divorced. The 1900 U.S. Federal Census for Colton, San Bernardino, California, showed that a divorced Aseneath C. Mathews, 50, was living with her children, John J., 28, Robert H., 20, Clarence L., 16, and Ora G., 10. This census record indicated that Aseneath was born in Missouri, and her parents in New York. All of her children were born in California. She owned her own home free from a mortgage, and John was working in a processing cannery, Robert and Clarence as farm laborers and Ora was in school.

By 1910, Aseneath, 60, was still living in Colton with her son Clarence, 26, and daughter Ora G., 20, at a home located at 480 M Street, and then she was listed as a widow. She had given birth to six children, all of whom were still living. Clarence was working as the proprietor of a jewelry store. Her son, John J. Mathews, 38, was living just a short distance away at 496 L Street, with his wife, Lula J., 31, and children, Bernice, 8, Thomas P., 6, Gerald J., 2. John and Lula had been married for 8 years and had given birth to three children, all born in California. John was working as a quarry man in a cement mill, and he owned his own home but had a mortgage.

In the 1920 census Aseneath was listed as Cecelia Mathews, 69, and was living with her married daughter, Ora and her family in the Township of Fillmore, Willow Grove Precinct of Ventura County, California, and they were listed as follows: Warren Ellis, 32, Ora G., 29, Lois, 6, Cecil, 4 years, 10 months, and Edward Ellis, one year, eight months old. Warren was working as a machinist helper on an oil well

They were still living in Fillmore in 1930 at 653 Santa Clara Street, and were listed as follows: Warren E. Ellis, 43, Ora G., 40, Lois E., 16, Cecil W., 15, Everett C., 11, Barbara J., 7 months old, and Aseneath C. Mathews, 80. They were renting their home for $30 per month and had a radio in their home. Warren and Ora had been married for 18 years. He was working as a welder in a welding shop.

By 1940 they were living at 629 Santa Clara Street in Fillmore, and were listed as: Warren, 53, Ora, 50, Cecil, 25, Everett, 21, Barbara, 10, and Cecelia A. Matthews, 90 years old. In this census Asenath Cecelia Dustin Mathews was once again listed as divorced rather than widowed. Warren was working as a welder for a refinery, Cecil was working as an oil worker in the oil fields and Everett as an assistant manager of a theater. Warren earned $1,860 income in 1939, working 52 weeks that year at 36 hours per week; Cecil earned $960 working 25 weeks and Everett $400 working 52 weeks that year at 8 hours per week. They were doing pretty good financially as a family that year.

Aseneath Cecelia Mathews passed away 3 years later on December 11, 1943, at the age of 93 years old while still living in Ventura County, California.
