Brief overview:

Celine (21), and her friend Micayla (19), who worked in the Atlas Security control room were on their way to work for a night shift, were both killed instantly when a mini-bus taxi jumped a red traffic light, on Kempston Road, Port Elizabeth on 29th January 2019. The 28-year-old driver, Yibanathi Ndike, then fled the scene.

  • Yibanathi Ndike was arrested in the early hours of the morning and faced two charges of culpable homicide and reckless and negligent driving. He appeared in court in February 2019, and case was remanded to the 5th December 2019.

  • In November 2019, Ndike indicated that he would plead guilty on the charges against him but at the 11th hour, he changed his legal team. He was expected back in court in February 2020, but failed to appear and a warrant of arrest was issued.
  • On 25th August 2020, he was sentenced to a fine of R12 000 or six years imprisonment on both culpable homicide charges. Half of the sentence was suspended to five years. He was able to pay the fine but his driver's license was suspended for 12-months.
  • The families of the two girls who were devastated that Ndike walked away as a free man.
