Cesar Menotti Garibaldi, Jr.

Nasce il 12 maggio 1884 a Roma, settimo tra i figli di Ricciotti e Costanza. Prende il nome dal fratello maggiore del padre, Menotti. Un'anno soltanto lo separa dal fratello Sante, con il quale condivide un temperamento moderato e lo spirito concreto. Orientato dal padre come tutti i fratelli verso le scuole tecnico-industriali, e invitato a lasciare la casa famigliare, esce nel 1901 dalla scuola navale di Gaeta e appena diciottenne, diplomato in ingegneria, raggiunge Sante al Cairo poi parte in Sudan dove lavora per le irrigazioni anglo-egiziane, mentre Sante si dirige verso Kartoum lavorando come cartografo. L'itinerario dei due fratelli li' si separa. Nel 1906, Menotti si trasferisce in Cina, dove fonda un'importante impresa per la costruzione di ferrovie. Riceve dal Governo cinese incarichi per lavori impegnativi, e molti riconoscimenti dalla Cina e dal Giappone. Mandarino di primo e quinto grado, è insignito dell'ambita Commenda del Sol Levante. Richiamato dal padre per la guerra di Grecia nel 1912 e per la campagna di Francia nel 1914 non puo' abbandonare i suoi impegni, ma torna nel 1915 si arruola come i fratelli il 12 giugno nel 51° Fanteria per la durata della guerra. Promosso immediatamente Tenente di complemento, in dicembre è Capitano per merito di guerra. Come i fratelli è entrato il 3 luglio nella Loggia "Francesco Guardabassi" del Grande Oriente d'Italia, a Perugia. Nella campagna del Marmolada, riceve il 30 aprile 1916 la Medaglia d'argento al Valor Militare. Il 28 Novembre 1917 è Maggiore per merito eccezionale, ed è di nuovo insignito della Medaglia d'argento al Valor Militare. Il 10 luglio 1918, riceve l'incarico di recarsi in Siberia quale delegato dell'Italia al Comitato tecnico interalleato per la reorganizzazione della Transiberiana e la delimitazione dei confini siberiani. Rimane in Siberia per tutto il 1919. Torna il 2 aprile 1920. Messo a disposizione dello Stato Maggiore, è posto in congedo il 15 settembre. Torna in Cina dove gli viene affidata la direzione delle tramvie di Tien Tsin. Occupa quell'incarico fino al 1924, senza destare osservazioni sul piano politico, ma nel 1925, tornato in Italia, dichiara al fratello Sante di non potervi vivere nella situazione che si è creata. Iscritto nel ruolo degli ufficiali come Maggiore, chiede di essere richiamato in servizio, ed è posto a disposizione del Ministero delle Colonie. E' a Roma quando le salme del padre e dei due fratelli morti nelle Argonne vengono traslate nella tomba offerta dal Governatorato di Roma, al Verano. Promosso al grado di Tenente Colonnello nel settembre 1929, parte in Eritrea, nel presidio di Cheren e Massaua. La licenza annuale lo riporta in Italia nel 1930 e nel 1931. Il 1° maggio 1932 lascia Massaua già in precarie condizioni di salute, e partecipa alle cerimonie per l'inaugurazione del monumento ad Anita in Roma. Si reca poi dal fratello Sante, in Francia, che é da poco sposato con Beatrice Borzatti, assieme alla giovane moglie Hortense Scheerdijk, originaria di Anversa. Deve poco dopo lasciare la carriera militare per ragioni di salute. L'ultimo suo impegno è quello di Console d'Italia a Colombo, Ceylan, incarico per il quale deve richiedere la tessera del PNF, che il fratello Ezio gli fa ottenere nel 1933. Muore a Colombo il 16 aprile 1934. La sua salma è solennemente rapatriata e riposa nella tomba di famiglia del Verano in Roma. Mentre il suo atto di nascita è stato registrato a Roma nel 1901, il suo atto di morte non vi figura. Hortense riposa anche lei al Verano. Menotti ed Horta non hanno avuto figli.

He was born on 12 May 1884 in Rome, seventh among the sons of Ricciotti and Costanza. It takes its name from the elder brother of the father, Menotti. One year only separates him from his brother Sante, with whom he shares a moderate temperament and a concrete spirit. Called back by his father for the war of Greece in 1912 and for the campaign of France in 1914 he can not abandon his commitments, but back in 1915 he enlisted like his brothers on 12 June in the 51st Infantry for the duration of the war. Promoted immediately Lieutenant of complement, in December he is Captain for war merit. As the brothers entered on July 3 in the "Francesco Guardabassi" Loggia of the Grand Orient of Italy, in Perugia. In the Marmolada campaign, he received the Silver Medal for Military Valor on 30 April 1916. On November 28th 1917 he was Major because of exceptional merit, and he was again awarded the Silver Medal for Military Valor. On 10 July 1918, he was commissioned to go to Siberia as a delegate of Italy to the inter-allied technical committee for the reorganization of the Trans-Siberian and the delimitation of the Siberian borders. He remained in Siberia for the whole of 1919. He returned to April 2, 1920. He was placed at the disposal of the General Staff, and was placed on leave on September 15th. He returns to China where he is entrusted with the direction of the Tien Tsin tramways. He held that position until 1924, without making any comments on the political level, but in 1925, when he returned to Italy, he declared to his brother Sante that he could not live there in the situation created. Enrolled in the role of officers as Major, he asks to be called back into service, and is placed at the disposal of the Ministry of the Colonies. It is in Rome when the bodies of his father and two brothers who died in the Argonne are moved to the tomb offered by the Governorate of Rome, in Verano. His corpse is solemnly wrapped and resting in the family tomb of the Verano in Rome. While his birth certificate was registered in Rome in 1901, his death certificate does not appear there. Hortense also rests at Verano. Menotti and Horta did not have any children.
