About Charity Stewart

A VIRGINIA PLANTATION Charity was the second child and first daughter born to Edward Richards [1731] and Elizabeth Stewart. Edward's plantation was about 6 miles south east of Rocky Mount in Franklin County VA.

In 1781, when 18 years of age, Charity married Charles Edward Stewart Sr. [1760] in Franklin County. Husband Charles farmed their land and began a family.

ON TO TENNESSEE Charles and wife Charity Stewart sold to Frederick Fishburne for $120, 80 acres on both sides Chestnut Creek on September 7 1807. Exactly when they left Virginia for Tennessee is unclear.

Her brother Edmund Hendley Richards Sr. & family [by 1814], son John Stewart's family, brother-in-law David Stewart, nephew Brice Stewart, the Warren, the Jones, the Maddox and the England families also removed into Roane, Morgan, and Robertson Counties Tennessee.

ONE MORE MOVE Some years later, in the period of 1828 to 1830, nearly all these families moved north into Macoupin & Morgan County of Illinois.

Charity was the mother of two sons: 1. Pastor John Stewart [1782] VA 2. Charles Stewart Jr.

ILLINOIS She and husband Charles had only a few years in Illinois before their passing. They are buried in a pasture on land originally purchased by son John Stewart in North Otter Township of Macoupin County IL. [Exact location: Go south from Oak Grove cemetery on 9 mile Road 1.23 miles, turn left/east on Finney Road and go 1.18 mile. The pasture on the south side of the road has their plot.] Later, the Crump family owned the property. I am indebted to Mary Ann Kaylor, Stewart descendant; for much of this information.
