About Charles (Clay?) Arledge

The News-Herald. (Hillsboro, Highland Co., Ohio) 1886-1973, March 21, 1901, Image 1

Chas. Purdom, alias, Chas Clay, was arrested at the home of relatives here Friday for deserting the United States Army. Purdom was born in Hillsboro, and was the son of Charles Clay, who was a number of years ago a clerk in the old Elliott House. His mother was an Arledge, and still resides here. Several months ago, Purdum deserted from the regiment at San Francisco and was captured and given 18 months sentence. He and two other prisoners escaped March 1 by knocking the guard senseless.

Now he is living with Charles Hauser in the 1920 census being divorced., it reads that he was Charles stepson. He is also living with he and Mary in the 1930 census. Where the last name of Clay comes in I don't have a clue. I do know that he isn't listed in any of the census as a Purdom. He used the last name Clay. He was married twice and both lists his mother as Mary.
