CWB was famous in his own way. He was a 'passive resister' who refused to vaccinate his kids, and to pay some forms of tax and so he was - along with others - always in and out of the courts paying fines, and therefore in the newspapers as well. See Media for cuttings re his court appearances. However, his big claim to fame came when he became a key player in the "Leckhampton Riots" of 1906, later termed "Dispute", (about the public's access to a local hill path being threatened). He knew about a planned major protest and when it began he was walking close by. He leapt up onto a cart which was blocking the road to the hill and proceeded to give a speech to the crowd - which included a plea to keep the protest peaceful. However others ignored his warning, began throwing stones and dismantling a cottage that was being built on the hill. CWB was rounded up with the rioters and accused of incentivising them through the speech he had made. There followed an extensive trial and all were convicted and sentenced, he to four months hard labour. Whilst he was in gaol a huge petition was got up on the prisoners' behalf - particularly about him, as he was deemed to be blameless - and the case was referred to high court in London, where the story became quite an item in the news. See Media for House of Lords Hansard record referring to Barrett's story in Hansard. All the 'Leckhampton Stalwarts' as they were called finally received the King's pardon and CWB was the first out of prison. He was interviewed on the morning of his release by the Gloucestershire Echo about his stay in prison. See Media for a bundle of articles.

1911 is at The Apiaries, Old Bath Road, Cheltenham working as a jobbing gardener, age 51, Angharad, Mildred (domestic nurse) and Ella are still at home.

Death registered Q2 1929 in Cheltenham, age 70. See Media for death notice and report on funeral.
