Mr Charles Brown, who died at Wairoa several days ago at the age of 85 years, was a very old settler of that district. He joined the 65th regiment as a young man, and served in it in Jersey and elsewhere for about 12 years. He came to New Zealand and received his discharge at Auckland where he married. He went to Napier in 1864 and to Wairoa a year later. He was several times in action against the rebel natives on the West Coast, and was awarded the New Zealand war medal. During the East Coast war in 1865-70 he served in the Wairoa Volunteer Rifles, and was a British Military Veteran pensioner.
