About Charles Buck, Jr.
His mother was Letitia Sorrell Callis Wilcox Buck. She was the aunt of his father's first wife, Anna Sorrell Earle.
While the head of this family gave two most excellent preachers to the world, and all his children were consistent Christians, I am told that he was a very wild, sporting character, not vicious, but his life was given to frolic and sports. His oldest son, Rev. Thomas Buck was one of the most prominent Baptist ministers in Virginia, and the youngest, William C. Buck, for years stood at the head of the ministry of that denomination in Kentucky, Mississippi, and Texas. Their lives will be noticed in the proper place. Ref: Historical Sketch of the Buck Family of Virginia and its Collateral Branches by John Thomas Buck of Mississippi.
Said to have been a prisoner of war during the Revolution, aboard a British ship in Charleston harbor, but no record has been found of his military service. Like his father, he was an ardent sportsman, but his life was greatly influenced and he was led into the Baptist faith by the Rev. James Ireland, pioneer Baptist preacher of early Virginia. Charles donated land near Buckton for the building of a Baptist church and a residence for Ireland, and two of this sons (Thomas and William) became prominent Baptist ministers. He lived and died in Virginia, he and his wife are buried in the family cemetery at Buckton, but several of his children followed their Uncle John westward. -- charts of H. N. Buck, 1965
His son, William Calmes Buck, wrote "My father was an extensive farmer" and the "personification of goodness and dignity" and that his parents were "models of Christian excellence during their lives".
Charles Buck and his brother, Thomas, were messengers from the Water Lick Church to the Ketoctin Association in 1795.
