Charles Dewitt Byrd was a member of the United States Navy, he was a Seaman First Class, his duties: Know naval drill duties, knots, steering and signaling. Stand watch and gunnery duties. He enlisted on October 3, 1940 in Nashville, Tennessee. He is from Kingsport, Tennessee and graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School.
He was killed aboard the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 as the first Servicemember killed from Kingsport, TN. His body was unrecoverable - among the 900 + souls still aboard the USS Arizona.
