About Charles Louis Loos, Sr
Professor Loos was born in Woerth, Bas Rhin (Alsace), France. He immigrated from France in 1834 with his mother, brother, and sisters to join his father in Stark County, Ohio. His father had preceded the family the previous year. After graduating from Bethany College in 1846, he stayed on as a professor in the Primary (pre-college level) Department. His academic career included the Collegiate Institute in Somerset, Pennsylvania (1853-1857), President of Eureka College in Eureka, Illinois (1857-1858), returning to Bethany as Professor of Ancient Languages (Hebrew, Greek, and Latin) from 1858-1880, and Kentucky University (now Transylvania University) as President from 1880 until his retirement in 1897. His legacy is in his children and their descendants and also in his students, many of whom went on to careers as academics, ministers, and missionaries.
