About Charles Maderas

--------------------------------------------------------

Charles Maderas didn't marry Mary Toseley, he married Mary Beamon. If Charles had married a Toseley child of Thomas and Elizabeth Toseley he would have been marrying a half sister. To my knowledge the only known name of a Toseley child is Elizabeth named in Thomas's will.

The following is an email that I just sent to Joyce Gore Locke: From information gathered from "A Place In Time," I don't think that any Maderas's married Toseley girls. "Thomas Toseley, in writing his will, assumed that his two minor children would remain with their mother, his second wife, but provided that, should she die, the two sons of his wife's first marriage (in other words, not Toseley's sons at all) 'manage and looke after My Children and their Estates.' "

Thomas Toseley married second Elizabeth, widow of Domingo Maderas. Her two sons with Domingo were Thomas's "sons-in-law Charles and John," but not the way that we think of it today. They were his step-sons and the Toseley girls would have been marrying half brothers.

Thomas and Elizabeth Toseley's daughter ? was the first wife of Minor Minor. They had at least 2 children - the 2 grandchildren named in Thomas Toseley's 1701 will, Elizabeth and Anne Minor.

Since Thomas and Elizabeth had 2 minor children in 1701, the daughter Elizabeth born to them in 1681 may or may not have been one of them. I suspect that she died young and they had another daughter Elizabeth as Thomas Clarke would have been some 9 years younger than that Elizabeth. You have this: "Elizabeth Tosely daughter of Tho. & Eliz. borne 7th of Ap. & baptiz 4th of June " which I can't find in my copy of the register. I'm a descendant of this Thomas Clark either through Elizabeth or his second wife Susannah. I suspect Susannah, as Thomas's daughter Mary Clark Owen named a daughter Susannah.

Toseley's other daughter may have been a Mary, but she didn't marry Charles Maderas. Charles married Mary Beamon.

From your notes: Va. C. Court Records, Deed Abstracts of Middlesex Co. Att a Court for Midx. County the 2nd of February 1690\1

And from my notes: "Known all men by these presents that I Charles Madorions am indebted to John Beamon of the County of Middlesex in the sum of one thousand pounds of good swt. Tobacco and Caske the ( ) of ( ) 1700. "The condition of this obligation is such that the above named John Beamon hath (missing) said Charles Madorions his Plantation One hundred acres of land during his (missing) excepting a bedd a chest for the (missing) of him said John Beamon and Mary his wife natural life in consideration of Wasing and Lodging (missing) to lodge and dwell in dureing his natural life then his obligation to be voys else to stand. In presence of John Madorions Charles Madorions Thomas Gamble Att a Court held for County of Middlesex the 6th day of May 1700. This bond was acknowledged and admitted to court."

This was from John to his new son-in-law, Charles Maderas who had recently married Mary Beamon. 100 years later in 1803 John Beamon (my 6Gr Uncle) notes in his will "my piece of land whereon I now live beginning at James Madeares line and then running up the branch and bottom to the main road."

The Beamon and Maderas families had lived side by side for 100 years.

GEDCOM Note

Charles lived next to Thomas Toseley on the family land settled by Domingo in the 1650's. He was probably in the second or third house built on the lad as most houses during the time, exposed to the weather, would require rebuilding every 10 to 15 years. charles likely built the first house on a rock or brick foundation situated at the corners and along the length. This home would e the first in our family to have a wooden floor, laid out on joists. he may also be the first home to have glass in the windows. In 1704 Charles owned 100 acres in Middlesex County.

We do not know every much about Charles and Mary. Charles is mentioned in a document in 1712 regarding the estate of John Hickey. Mare was mentioned in a 1717 document found in Middleses County regarding the Ncholas Howse estate. she also asks for her son Charles to be added to the list of tithables in 1718. It is unknown when Charles died, but we have Mary passing away on 2/5/1720 and buried on the 7th.
