About Charles Porter Pollard
He was the youngest in the family and he went to sea at Hallowell, deserted his ship in California and joined his uncle Samuel Adams and his sisters, Mary Leonard and Ellen Flint. To Lizzie Flint, his sweetheart in Hallowell, he sent an engagement ring and asked her to come out to California to marry him. She never received the ring, but she took ship for the western coast, sailed around the Horn, and married Charles in Oakland. A few years later she died, leaving a six year old son, Charles Flint Pollard, who was sent back to Salem alone to be cared for by the Flint family.
