About Charles Rosenswaike

Machinist. Home on 159 E 108th St, NY, NY

Charles marries Mary Stiefel in 1885. In fact, this is the second marriage for Mary. Her name on the marriage certificate actually reads Marianne Stiefel Goodhardt. We know Mary is from Germany. In 1880, a Marianne Goodhardt, born 1847 in Germany, appears in the census. At just 33, she is a widow. And bingo, this is indeed your gg-gm: there's is an 1873 NYC marriage record for Mariam Stiefel and Charles Goodhardt. She was married at most 7 years, and there were no children.

Charles dies in 1892. We don't know exactly when he immigrated, but there is a possibility that his marriage to Mary was actually his second as well. A Charles ROSENSWAIKE/ROSENZWEIG (both names are used), born about 1847 in England, lives with wife Fanny Calo ROSENZWEIG, also of England, in NYC in 1870. They will have at least three children: Moses 1868, Rebecca 1869 and Ada >1870. I wasn't able to find this family in later years, other than Ada's marriage (as a ROSENSWAIKE) in 1902.

As a tribute, at least two of Charles' siblings name their sons after him following his death. Jacob's son Charles is born in 1893, and Morris' son is born 1903. Millie is a family name as well. Jacob's daughter Millie is born 1892, while Charles' is born 1886. Other than a cursory glance at marriage, birth and death records, I haven't spent much time researching the siblings, you might want to take that up (after your kids go to college ;)

As far the mother's name, most documents say Dora (the 1861 England census says "Mary", which seems to be a clear mistake). Charles' 1885 marriage has his mother's name as Rebecca Cohen, and wife Mary's mother as Dore Weil. I have a suspicion that the mothers' names were transposed, and Dore Weil is actually Charles' mother. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to confirm this: I could'nt find marriage records for Abraham Rosenzweig in Russia or Poland to a Dora (or to a Rebecca); and Mary's first marriage in 1873 does not contain parents' names. It's a mystery for now.

Mary Steifel appears on someone's tree on Ancestry. I've emailed her (Lynn Thomas), so we'll see if that leads to something! I also tried JewishGen for people researching ROSENZWEIGS in both England and Russia and/or Poland, but there's no overlap.
