The first person of this name came of which we have any record is Charles who appears among the early settlers of Exeter, NH, in the year 1675. There is a well settled tradition in the Maine branch that the Rundlett’s were French Hugenots who crossed from Lyons, France, about 1590 and after a sojourn in South England, some 33 years, landed at Rye, NH in 1623.

The genealogy of the Rundlett family in the archives of the New England Historical Society gives a detailed account of MA and NH branches of this family.

    • RANDLETT
  • The bearers of the name Randlett, Ranlet, Rundlet and Runlet, are descended from one common ancestor. These names appear occasionally in the records of various parts of New England, but there is little or no information to be gleaned relative to their early history on this side of the ocean. Charles Rundlett. Runlet, or Ranlet, of Exeter, New Hampshire, was in the last half of the seventeenth century captured by the Indians, from whom he eventually escaped, and he was accidentally drowned August 1, 1709. He may have been an immigrant, but it is more probable that he was born the son of one.
  • (I) The first of the line herein considered, so far discovered, was James Rundlett. He was among the petitioners for the establishment of the town of Stratham, December 3, 1709. He was probably a resident of the district now comprising that town for some time previous to this date. His wife's name was Elizabeth, and their children, born in Stratham from 1700 to 1731, were: Liddeah. Daniel, Theophilus, Jonathan, James. Mary, Sarah, Charles and Josiah.
  • (II) Josiah Rundlett, was born January 20, 1731, in Stratham. and married Mary Phillips. Their children, born from 1759 to 1771, were: Jonathan, Sarah, Josiah, Mary, Rachel, Priscilla, Susannah and Edmund. ________________________

Pioneer Charles Rundlet was born in 1652 and settled in Exeter, N. H. in 1672. It is thought by historians that he was not an immigrant, but rather the son of one. However, he was listed as a servant to Philip Chesley in 1667. (Libby Davis Noyes' Genealogical Dictionary of New Hampshire and Main) It seems likely that Mr. Chesley might have paid his passage to America in the expectation of having his services for a certain length of time. Perhaps by 1672 his debt to Chesley had been paid, and he was free to take up land and become a settler in his own right.

The name Rundlet means "round cask" (letter from Elmer Hunt, Director of N. H. Historical Society) and it has many spellings. But whether it is Randlett, Rundlett, Randlet or Rundlet, it is believed that all persons having that name descended from a common ancestor. They have settled in Main, Massachusettes and New Hampshire and have been useful and highly respected citizens.

Charles was captured by four Indians in September 1675, and they left him in the custody of one of their number names James. Charles was successful in inducing him to connive at his escape. (Charles H. Bell's History of the Town of Exeter, N. H. p. 215) That year in December Charles married Mary SMITH, a widow, whose maiden name was Satchwell. Twins, Charles and Jane, were born to them on May 8, 1676 and according to the strict customs of those days, Charles and Mary had to confess to the sin of fornication before marriage and be forgiven by vote before they could partake of Communion and be members of the Church. They were taken to Court in Salem, Massachusettes and fined. (Salem Court Records obtained by Rev. R. D. Sawyer)
