About Charles Yancey, Sr.

notes

There are no clues to his European origin. The predominant family tradition is that the family is Welsh, descended from four or five brothers who came to America about 1642 with Sir William Berkeley. Sources differ, but the names usually given are Charles, Robert, James, William, Joel and John. Against this tradition is the fact that, with one exception, there is no trace of the name in America until 1704, when the only landowner among them, Charles Yancy, had a mere 100 acres. This modest estate suggests that the family were relatively recent immigrants. Nevertheless, the family might have been descended from John Jancy, living 1666 in Lancaster County, Virginia, the only earlier person of this name in Virginia.

The surname Yancey is found only in America, and researchers are split on the issue of what the origin form might have been. One theory is that Yancey is an anglicized spelling of the Dutch name Jantje, which means "Johnny." Another suggests that the name might be an anglicized form of the Swiss name Jantzi. The Yanceys were associated with various Huguenot families, such as the Dumas, Dabneys and Mullins, and might themselves have been Huguenots.
