About Charlotte Rehnberg

Charlotte Rehnberg, 92, formerly of Fort Collins, passed away peacefully at the Balfour in Louisville, Colorado, with family by her side. She was born October 19, 1922 in Billings, Mont., where her father, a graduate of Harvard Law School, was a district judge. Following his death, the family moved back to Cincinnati, Ohio. She graduated from Walnut Hills High School, then attended Marietta College and Western Michigan University, graduating with a degree in occupational therapy. She joined the Navy in 1944 and was stationed at the hospital on the Mare Island Naval Base in San Francisco, where she worked with wounded servicemen. There she met Lt. Rex Rehnberg, a submariner, and after his tour of duty in the Pacific, they were married on June 1, 1946. The newlyweds drove from the west coast across the country to Ithaca, N.Y., where Rex completed his Master's Degree at Cornell. After first son Peter was born, they then moved to Lafayette, Ind. where Rex completed his PhD and where the twins, Tim and Mike were born. From there it was on to Tucson for a job at the University of Arizona. After two years of 100 degree weather with no air conditioning, the family moved to Fort Collins in 1952, where Rex joined the faculty at Colorado A & M (later CSU). While based in Ft. Collins the couple also lived for periods of time in Puerto Rico, Colombia, South Korea, and Egypt. They purchased a small house and acreage west of the campus on Shields St., then a country gravel road. Nick, their fourth son was born, and a new house was built on the back acre, where they lived until Rex died in 2006. Charlotte was an active member of the Fort Collins community. She was a lifelong member of the Democratic Party, and belonged to the League of Women Voters, Friends of the Library, the Weavers Guild, and at the time of her passing, was the oldest member of the Foothills Unitarian Church. In the retirement years, she continued her love of travel, visiting many countries around the world. When back in Ft. Collins, she continued her community service and joined the SOAP troupe (Slightly Older Adult Players) where she acted in plays, sang with the SOAP Tones, and tap danced with the SOAP Toes. She was a proud wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She will be greatly missed. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rex, and siblings Richard, Eleanor, Barbara, and Betty. She is survived by sons, Peter (Susan) of Fairplay, Mike (Debbie) of Jefferson, Ore., Tim (Betty) of Pullman, Wash., and Nick (Diane) of Boulder, 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. A family celebration of life will be held "up the Poudre" followed by lunch at Charlotte's favorite restaurant, El Burrito.
