About Charlotte Thannhauser

The official record of Floss shows her birthday as March 3 [Renate Höpfinger, "Die Judengemeinde von Floss, 1684-1942" chart L 21] but his father's prayerbook (see sources) shows it as March 4. There is often a one day discrepancy between Hebrew and German records, when the hebrew is one day later presumably the child was born after sundown so it is the next day for jews.

Her father's prayer book gives her Hebrew name as Darel and her birthdate as the 13th of the month of Adar 5623

The family story is that she did not wish to live in Floss and wanted to move to the city.

According to her granddaughter Stasi, the family story is that a cousin of Joseph's named Sophie Weil wrote and suggested Josef Thannhauser of Munich come to Floss and meet Charlotte who had a nice dowry. When he came calling, she was very snooty and he left all flustered. After he left, Charlotte's parents gave her a tongue lashing for being so rude to such a nice gentleman. The story is that they were afraid that she would marry a Christian if they didn't find a nice Jewish fellow for her. Fortunately for us, he left his umbrella and when he came back the next day for it, she was much nicer

And so she ended up marrying Josef Thannhauser and helping him set up his business making pewter tops for beer steins and chamber pots. Another family story is that she fixed up her sister Lina with his half brother Albert in order to get Lina's dowry into the business. This business was the beer mug lid and stein business, Gebruder Thannhauser (see ). Their descendants live in Israel today.

She was later called the "chamber pot" queen by perhaps jealous others in Munich.

She looks a bit proud or arrogant in most of her pictures and portrait but she was a very loving grandmother and all her grandchildren adored her. She also loved to play cards, particularly bridge. Another family story is that she was caught cheating at cards at a spa in Baden and was barred from returning there.

Still another family story is that childbirth was so difficult for her that she banned her husband from the bedroom and encouraged him to have a mistress.
