About Chloe Urrinda Child

Urinda Child Hoopes Barkdull, daughter of the late O.R, Child Sr. and Sarah Urinda (Rawson) Child was born October 5, 1882, at Plain City, Utah. The family was among the early settlers of Star Valley coming here when Urinda was about six years of age. She spent her youth in Fairview where she was loved and admired by all who knew her.

On February 4, 1904, she was united in marriage to Frank Hoopes, oldest son of F.M. Hoopes, who died recently. To this union were born eight children, seven of whom are living. One son, Farrel died while very young. On October 13, 1918, her husband was taken by influenza, one of the first in Star Valley to die with disease. She courageously undertook the rearing of this large family alone.

In the winter of 1920 she was married to John Barkdull of Fairview and to this union were born three children, all of whom are living at the present time. The family moved to Springville, Utah, in 1922 and later to American Fork, Utah, where they were living at the time of her death.

For about five years Urinda has been a constant sufferer, suffering from an incurable disease. Death came as a blessed relief to her. Through all her trouble and suffering she has manifested great courage, being at all time cheerful and smiling. All who knew her loved her and spoke of her wonderful character. She has always been an ardent church worker. Just prior to her death she was busy sewing for the Relief Society in the ward in which she lived. She has done Temple work the last few years whenever her health would permit.

Those who are left to mourn her loss are her husband, John Barkdull and three children, Lorene, Larue and Edward Barkdull of American Fork, Utah; LaThair Hoopes of South Fork, California, Mrs. Cleo Branson of Cokeville, Wyoming, Ray Hoopes of Salt Lake City, Lynn Hoopes of Osmond, Marion Hoopes, Mrs. Grace Hardman and Corn Hoopes of American Fork, four daughters-in-law, two sons-in-law, eleven grandchildren and the following brothers and sisters; O. R. Child, Ogden, Utah; Annie Dewey, Emmett, Idaho, May Harmon, Smithfield, Utah, Minnie Richardson, American Falls, Idaho, Luetta Roberts, Twin Falls, Idaho, Ella Wilkes, Pocatello, Idaho, H.E. Child, Fairview Wyoming, and Elva Reed, Atlantic City, New Mexico. All of the children except LaThair were in attendance at the funeral.

Funeral services held November 21st for Urinda Child Hoopes Barkdull under the direction of Bishop J.L. Brown. Singing "Come Come Ye Saints" Prayer by Will Cassity Song by Singing Mother, "O Star Divine" R.H. Hillstead admired Rinda and her large family. He is sure we will all meet again. He told of the truth and beauty of the resurrection. Madaline Hopkins and Ruby Chadwick sang, "That Wonder Mother of Mine" with Mrs Louise Cranney accompanying them at the piano.

A. R. Kennington said he had known the Child family for 35 years. He always remembered Rinda as being a prominent worker in the ward. He said she had filled her destiny of womankind in raising a large family. What a grand hope the Latter-day Saints have in Life after Death. He felt that we are a fortunate people to live in the mountains where peace and plenty and love hold sway. He bore a strong testimony of the gospel.

Leona and Ronald Allred sang, "Mother Dear Do You Hear Me Calling You." Orson Harmon who has been associated with the Child family all his life has always found Rinda with a smile for everyone and she was always kind and loving, and active in the ward. He bore his testimony to the truthfulness of the gospel.
