About Christian Stewart

CHRISTIAN STEWART

According to Sir James Balfour Paul's Scots Peerage, Christian Stewart is the illegitimate daughter of Robert Stewart, Earl of Orkney, and the wife of John Mouat of Hougaland in Shetland. He says that she survived the death of her husband and that she was alive in 1634. The Scots Peerage Frances J. Grant, sometime Carrick Pursuivant of Arms, has Christian Stewart marrying John Mouat of Hugoland but he makes no mention of her father. The County Families of the Shetland Islands

The Question of Identity

Melville Henry Massue, Marquis of Ruvigny and Raineval, has identified Christian Stewart as the wife of Adam Mudie of Melsetter but this appears to be wrong. The Moodie Book The Marquis is certainly contradicted by a charter issued by Robert Stewart, feuar of Orkney and soon to be the Earl, of Orkney which is made in favour of his daughter Grizel Stewart, her father-in-law William Mudie of Breckness, and her husband Adam Mudie of Melsetter. An abstract of this charter was published in J. Storer Clouston's Records of the Earldom of Orkney Records of the Earldom of Orkney Moreover, Grizel Stewart, following the death of Adam Mudie of Melsetter, appears to have married for a second time to Hugh Sinclair of Brugh in Shetland. Grizel Stewart died before 21 Apriil 1591. The County Families of the Shetland Islands
