About Christopher George Cardew

Christopher was born on 24 October 1894 in Wimbledon, Surrey, the son of Arthur Cardew and Alexandra Rhoda Kitchin. He married, firstly, Beatrice Edith Stephens on 9 February 1918 in Ampthill, Bedfordshire. In 1935 Christopher petitioned for divorce from Beatrice, citing Joseph Vernon Ellis as co-respondent (National Archives J 77/3465/5740). Christopher was an army officer, educated at the Royal Military Academy and commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers on 17 November 1914 (London Gazette 13 November 1914 p9384) and promoted to lieutenant on 30 January 1916 (London Gazette 18 February 1916 p1889). In 1916 Christopher served in Greek Macedonia, Serbia, Bulgaria, European Turkey, and the Islands of the Aegean Sea ( He was promoted to captain on 3 November 1917 (London Gazette 15 February 1918 p2126), then served in Russia from 20 September 1918 until 18 June 1919 and present during the Campaign in Waziristan from 1921 until 1924 ( Christopher was appointed to the staff in India as Technical Officer E.-in-C. Bch. on 1 January 1927 (London Gazette 29 April 1927 p2771) and promoted to major on 23 April 1930 (London Gazette 3 June 1930 p3491). He vacated his appointment as technical officer on 1 January 1931 (London Gazette 24 April 1931 p2650) and was appointed Staff Officer Royal Engineers, 2nd Grade on 17 February 1932 (London Gazette 20 May 1932 p3280), vacating that appointment on 17 September 1936 (London Gazette 6 November 1936 p7127). Christopher was appointed Staff Officer Royal Engineers, 1st Grade on 2 June 1938 (London Gazette 29 July 1938 p4886) and promoted to lieutenant-colonel five days later on 7 June 1938 (London Gazette 7 June 1938 p3638). Christopher retired on 6 May 1947 and was granted the honorary rank of colonel (London Gazette 6 May 1947 p2060). He died on 13 February 1976 in Mendip Hospital, Wells, Somerset.
