About Christopher Columbus Dustin

Christopher Columbus Dustin was the 9th child of Bechias Dustin and his wife, Aseneth Hurlbut. He was born in about 1839 or 1840 somewhere in Illinois. A California Voter Registration Record for San Bernardino, California, dated August 29, 1871, showed that Christopher Columbus Dustin, was 29, born in Illinois, and was working as a farmer. His older brother, Franklin, 36, was also living in San Bernardino and working as a farmer, and their older brother, Joseph, 39, was also working as a farmer there. His registration date was made earlier on July 30, 1866.

Information from these census records San Bernardino, California, leads me to believe that their parents, Bechias Dustin and Aseneth Hurlbut Dustin, must have left the New York area sometime after 1833 but before 1834, when Christopher and Joseph's brother, Franklin, was born in Quincy, Adams County, Illinois, in 1834. The Dustin's had joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the early 1830's while still living in New York state, and migrated West with other members of the church. Their daughter, Roxanna Mahala Dustin Welker, was born in LeRoy, Genessee, New York, in 1833. She was my 3rd great grandmother.

In a 1898 San Bernardino, California, Voter Registration Record, Christopher Columbus Dustin, was 57 years old, 5'-2" tall, with a fair complexion, gray eyes and gray hair, a crooked little finger on his left hand, and was working as a farmer. He was born in Illinois in about 1840, and the date of his registration was July 5th. His brother, Joseph, was also listed in the same census record, and was 70 years old at the time, 5'-7" tall, with a light complexion, gray eyes and gray hair. He was also working as a farmer, and was born in New York. His registration date was July 8th.

Christopher's older sister, Roxanna Mahala Dustin, was living in Pottawattamie County area of Iowa, in 1850 having escaped Nauvoo, Illinois, when the Mormons were driven out not long after the assassination of Joseph Smith, The Prophet of the Church, on June 27, 1844. Roxanna married her husband, John Welker, in August, 1850, in Pottawattamie County, Iowa, and their daughter, Louisa Roxana Welker Madsen, was born there in 1851 before the family started west to Utah in 1852 with the Isaac Stewart Mormon Pioneer Company.

After living in Utah for several years, Roxanna and her husband John Welker, moved to Bloomington, Bear Lake, Idaho, in 1863, where they lived for 20 years. In September of 1883, they relocated via wagon train to Safford, Arizona, along with other Welker and Dustin family members, however, I don't think that Christopher or Joseph ever went to Arizona. Instead, they went to San Bernardino, perhaps sometime after 1865 when Roxanna and her family moved from Utah to Idaho.

Many Mormon Church members had been sent from Utah to San Bernardino in1851 to settle that area in order to have a longer growing season for their crops than in Utah, but I don't know if any of the Dustin family members were sent there at that time. And a few years later, the Mormon Pioneers of San Bernardino were called back to Utah in 1857 due to Johnson's Army approaching at that time. The father, Bechias Dustin, died in November of 1874, while living in Bloomington Bear Lake, Idaho, so it appears that at least three of his sons, Joseph, Franklin, and Christopher moved to San Bernardino before their father's death.

Bechias may have been separated or divorced from their mother, Aseneth Hurlbut Dustin, prior to his death in 1874, and since Aseneth passed away in San Bernardino, California, on May 26, 1875, she may have gone there to live with her children sometime between 1865 and 1875. Another of her sons, Fornatus Dustin, born February 17, 1820, in Le Roy Genessee, New York, passed away in Acampo, San Joaquin, California, October 11, 1872, at the age of 52 years old. Acampo is in Northern California, between Stockton and Sacramento and about 100 miles east of San Francisco. Another son, Bechias, Jr., born October 21, 1823, in Hartland, Niagra, New York, passed away sometime after 1870 while living in Hamsfork, Lincoln, Wyoming, at the age of 48 years. Another son, Seth, born October 21, 1835, also in Hartland, passed away December 2, 1903, in Garden City, Rich, Utah. A daughter, Aseneth Cecilia Dustin, born February 25, 1829, in Le Roy, New York, died in San Bernardino in about 1899 or 1900.. Roxanna Mahala Dustin Welker, died March 11, 1903, in Safford, Arizona.

Christopher Columbus Dustin passed away August 22, 1898, just a month after his Voter Registration Record was filed in San Bernardino. He was buried in the Pioneer Memorial Cementer there. I don't know if he ever married or had any children. Their older brother, David Dustin, born February 15, 1817, in Genesse, Allegany, New York, appears to have stayed in Illinois, and not traveled west with the rest of the family, since he died June 25, 1893, in Quincy, Adams, Illinois. I'm not sure when or where Franklin passed away, but it was probably sometime after 1885. Another brother, Andrew, may have died young in 1845, but I don't know when or where he was born.
