About Christopher Falcon Scott
He served in the Royal New Zealand Air Force in World War 2. As part of his No. 75 (NZ) Squadron, on 22 Dec 1940 the Wellington bomber he was piloting was part of a bombing raid on Mannheim, Germany. They were on the way back when their aircraft was disabled by ground anti-aircraft fire near Therouldeville in Northern France. In the moonlight he tried to crash land the plane on the ground but it broke in half on landing. Five of them survived but the 6th, the rear gunner Sgt Ritchie was killed. His parents later got a letter from him stating he was in hospital in Rouen with both legs and one arm broken. For eight months he waited for a chance to escape before doing so and getting to unoccupied France, then Spain. He was back in NZ by September 1941. He was promoted to the rank of Pilot Officer, from Sergeant, on 15 Jun 1942. Service number: 391847. He was buried in Timaru Cemetery, Timaru.
