In 1734 Christopher Uhl is mentioned in the Hebron Church accounts. 28 Jan. 1742/43 Orange County VA Order Book 3, page 313, Christopher Uhlewas listed with others from the Robinson River area in a petition fornaturalization. They being "german protestants, having produced acertificate under the hand of Rev. George Samuel Klug , Minister of theGerman Congregation in Orange County, that they within two months lastpasthad received the Sacrament of ye Lords Supper, prayed that they mightpartake of the benefit of ... an Act for naturalizing such foreignprotestants ...."
Johni Cerny and Gary J. Zimmerman in their booklet "Before Germanna, No.9May 1990, The Ancestry of the Zimmerman, Yowell, Mercklin, Wegman andLetherer Families" Locate Christophe Uhl in the records of Sulzfeld,Baden. Where also was found records of the Zimmerman and Kappler/Kablerfamilies. Christoph Uhl's wife in Sulzfeld is identified in these recordsas Eva Gottsaurin.
Eva Gottsaurin Yowell is not found in the Virginia records. The nextrecord in which a wife of Christopher Yowell is identified is 8 Mar1742/3,Orange co Deed Book 7, page 155, when Christopher Owell(Yowell) and wifeMary Owell grant to John Owell 100 acres of the 400 acre tract granted toChristopher Yowell in 1728. The Yowell name in the old Virginia Recordsisfound with various spellings such as Awell, Owell, Youel, Uhle, etc.Orange co Deed Book 11, page 136, Christopher Yowell to John Yowell 100acres. No wife for Christopher. Orange co Deed Book 11, page 133 17 mar 1749/50 Christopher Yowell andwife Margareth Yowell to Peter Clore, 203 acres. It would appear thatChristopher would have had at least three wives, the maiden names of wifeMary and wife Margaret have not been determined at this date. Nor is itknow if all of Christopher's children were born to Eva or if some werebornto Mary. Believing that he married Margaret later and there is noindication of any children born to the later marriage.

During the Revolutionary War there was a draft to meet Virginia's quota of troops for the Continental Army. A January 1781 list divides eligible Culpeper Co. men into 106 classes of 14 men each, from which one was drafted. The list is clearly organized by neighborhood, and so is a bit like a census.(9) It shows Sarah's sons and sons-in-law living relatively near each other. James and William Hurt both appear in class 71,(10) Elijah Berry is in class 72,(11) and Acrey Berrey appears in class 73 next to William Grayson.(12) There are three John Yowells in the list in classes 69 and 70: "John Yowell", "John Yowell (son of James)", and "John Yowell (son of David)."(13) None of these kinsmen of James1 (--?--) Hurt wound up being drafted.

Birth: 1720 Death: 1775 Culpeper County Virginia, USA

Christopher's father, Christopher was in the 2nd Germanna settlement of Alexander Spotswood

CHRISTOPH UHL/1 YOWELL (Source: (1) Before Germanna by Johni Cerny and Gary Jay Zimmerman, Chapters 1, 3 and 7., (2) Yowell and Related Families by Ann Yowell Cook, Pub. 1994.) was born Abt. 1680 in Wurttenberg, Germany, and died 1761 in Culpeper Co., Va.. He married EVA GOTTSAURIN Abt. 1704 in Wurttenberg, Germany.

Christoph Uhl (Yowell), his wife and 6 children were part of the Second Germanna Colony. The colony was comprised of Lutherans, it left Germany on 12 July 1717 on route to Pennsylvania. The colonist's choice of a vessel, The Constitution, was, in hindsight, profoundly unfortunate. They made the customary stop in London, but there they were detained for several weeks while the Captain, Scott, was imprisoned for debt. Food supplies dwindled while the passengers waited for their captain's release. Actual starvation took the lives of many passengers at sea. There are no details on their voyage across the ocean, but once arrived the captain did not land in Pennsylvania. Instead he took his approximately one hundred passengers to Virginia where he sold them to Governor Spotswood to pay for their passage and confiscated their belongings. While Spotswood may have recognized the injustice done these immigrants, he profited from the situation to extract eight years of indentured labor from them. They were not released until 1725, a year longer than the customary seven.

Christoph was naturalized on 15 October 1745. He stated he was from Wurttemberg but German records prove his residence in Sulzfeld, Baden. Sulzfeld parish records list the birth and christening of six children born to Christoph Uhl and wife Eva Gottsaurin. The first year the family is mentioned at Sulzfeld is 1705 which suggests that they moved there from Wurttemberg shortly before that date. From these parish records we know that Eva was the mother of the first six children. Christoph had one or two more wives so the mother of the four children born in Virginia is not certain.

He died intestate in 1761 and John Dillard, Benjamin Thomas and W. Bradley returned an appraisal valuing his estate at slightly over sixty pounds on 20 January 1762.

Christoph Uhl was among a group of Lutherans who left Germany on 12 July 1717 on board the "Constitution," which was captained by a Captain Scott. The ship sailed to London and was kept from sailing any further because of the detainment of the captain in London. The ship's supplies were exhausted by the time the captain was released to sail the ship to the New World. However, he was not to go to Pennsylvania as the Germans had hoped. Scott sailed for Virginia and there the German immigrants worked for Governor Spotswood for eight years. Apparently, Nicholas Uhl (probably a brother of Christoph) was on the boat and died from the meager food supply as did Nicholas's wife. Their son Jacob Michael Uhl apparently survived the voyage and is mentioned once in Virginia records in 1733 as "Michael Owell." Christopher and Eva seem to have survived as well and to have had four more children ;Eva (Gottsaurin) Yowell seems to have died after 1725 but before 1728.
