Because Clara was just six years old when her parents died, she and her brother Arthur (who was five years old) were raised by their paternal grandparents, Dr. Storm Vanderzee and Sarah Parcher. Storm and Sarah's children were adults at the time, were married, and had children of their own. By residing with her grandparents and hearing their family stories, Sarah acquired considerable knowledge about her Vanderbilt and Vanderzee forebears.
