L.G. (Steve) Stevens Family

By Clara (Pease) Rolph

Found in a book entitled A PLACE BY THE NOTUKEU. This is a book created by the Vanguard Historical Society of Vanguard, Saskatchewan, Canada.

L.G. (Steve) Stevens came to Vanguard from Winnipeg, sometime in the early 20’s. He worked for Lawrence Thiessen in the store until he bought his own store in 1927.

I am the oldest daughter of Alford Claude Pease from Orano, Michigan and Clara Ford Mitchell from Bingham Canyon, Utah. My parents came to Canada in 1919 or 1920, first settling north of St. Boswells and then after several moves finally to the north of Pambrun. My parents spent 10 years in Canada.

Steve and I were married on July 20, 1927, the same year as we opened the White Grocery. As I had bee working at the hotel, we continued to live at the hotel for 3 months after we were married. We then bought Mr. Gottchall’s house.

Our son, Elgie Franklin was born Jan. 12, 1929, and 12 years later our daughter, Patricia was born.

I worked in the store 3 days a week, and I baked and helped at teas for the Anglican, Catholic and United Churches.

Our store burned down in one of the big fires in Vanguard. We moved to a corner garage for 3 months, and then the Burton Bros., Hank Sonder, and Bert Dykema pulled in a building which we fixed up and started up in business in the White Grocery again.

In 1941, we sold the store to Bert Dykema, had an auction sale and sold all of our household goods. In December, 1941, we moved from Canada to Salt Lake City, Utah.

Steve and I are divorced. He is living with Elgie in California. Patricia lives in Salt Lake City, is married and has 5 children.

I married Alvin Rolph and continue to live in Salt Lake City.
